CHAPTER 27

Carrying a sandwich in a zip lock bag, Three opened the cabin door to see Andrea still lying on the bed. He stepped inside and closed the door, not wanting any of the ship’s crew to interfere with him again.

Tossing the sandwich on a chair, he walked over to the bed and looked hungrily at Andrea’s breasts. His women were usually street tarts who required a knife to the throat. But this time it would be different. This time he would do what he wanted while the bitch was asleep. With a grin, he took hold of her jeans.

A fist shot out and smashed him in the nose.

Grabbing his face, Three staggered back just as Andrea leaped up and kicked him in the groin. She then grabbed him by the shirt and slammed his head into the metal frame of the bed.

“Take that, you son of a bitch!” she hissed as Three slid to the floor. If she had a cricket bat, she’d finish the job.

There was no time now for vengeance, so she buttoned her shirt and rifled through his pockets. Finding nothing, she moved quickly to the door. She opened it, looked in both directions, then stepped into the corridor and closed the door behind her. She paused facing the door and tried to remember which direction they had come when they arrived. To her right was a large open hatch.

They had stepped through a hatch.

She ran toward it. Once through, she followed the corridor to a flight of stairs. Which way now? Up or farther along to another flight of stairs that led down? She couldn’t think and wished now that she had grabbed the sandwich. She rubbed the dull ache in her temples and tried to recall their arrival on board the freighter. They had driven into the stern of the ship then up a ramp and into a parking space near the elevator, which they took up a floor or two into the ship’s accommodation. So she needed to get back down to those lower decks.

Bypassing the first flight of stairs, she ran toward the second. From behind her came a string of curses as Three staggered out of the cabin, holding his head. Andrea darted around a corner and down the stairs, hoping she had not been noticed.

But she had been noticed, and Three shouted after her.

She took the stairs two at a time and reached the floor below. Which way now? She ran to her left and around a corner. There it was! The elevator! She pushed the button several times.

Come on, come on!

Hearing the echo of footsteps on metal stairs, she decided to keep moving and ran along the passageway to a junction of two other passageways. Which way now? To her right was a door and men’s voices. She opened the door. Three Panamanian crewmen in blue overalls were playing cards in a room full of small tables and vending machines. They looked up at her and stared.

Andrea started to ask for help when she saw the opposite door open.
